WoW Designer chimes in on: Developers don't listen to Players ( good read for the industry as a whole )

http://kotaku.com/world-of-warcraft-designer-gets-real-about-complaint-th-1775811149?utm_campaign=Socialflow_Kotaku_Facebook&utm_source=Kotaku_Facebook&utm_medium=Socialflow

tldr: Most players stick inside circles w/ others that share the same opinion giving the illusion of an actual concensus of thought re: game/game mechanics. Reality is that no group of players is a majority and every decision made by a developer will frustrate someone. IF a change pisses everyone off equally, developers review and revert. Best way to please people is to either 1) make everything for everyone which diminishes the importance of the change or 2) improve groups one by one knowing they'll make some people happy & others upset ( they opt for #2 )

Not really a fair comparison to RoM. Wow has much higher player base and immensely more content. Despite that, they are much more actively involved in communicating with their communities and they do respond to their players - just not under the banner of trying to please everyone. I played WoW for many years but I can only comment based on my personal experience. When I left, it wasn't the interaction with the company or how they addressed customer concerns that led to my departure, the game was actually quite exceptional at the time, I had just played it long enough and it was time for something else.

Final thought: There are far too many posters on these forums IMO that seem to grant unlimited license to GF and RW, routinely make excuses, conflate GMs with GF/RW employees and in some cases try to shame other players who post ideas or comments they disagree with or that are critical of the game. That's what the forums should be for - to ask questions and air grievances. Instead it has become something else. Something much less and it shows in the reduction of posts over the past few years. Such a shame.

What has a comment by a developer from a game that actually listens to players have to do with ROM ? It was just silly and shows us how great the differences of the companies that run the games are. Their people actually talk to the players on a regular basis and value their opinions. They make regular appearances in their forums to discuss issues and problems not hide and refuse to communicate about issues. There is no comparison of players that has any relevance without a comparison of the companies.

just a random thought, i remember when mika and thepit spoke with the people and the guildleaders... we were hoping that maybe future communications/relations would continue to be that close or closer... ahwell

I disagree, the article does apply partially to RoM. While unlike WoW in that RoM has several deeply entrenched issues whose existence has almost unanimous agreement among players, there are huge disagreements in how these issues should be addressed. The solutions proposed by players often hurt the interests of another group (either players or GF), has some form of drawback, or are just difficult to implement without an overhaul to the entire system, and it is up to RW to select out only the feedback that they can implement and ignore everything else.

Whether or not RW is knowledgable enough about the game to do that... who knows.

I'm not even going to read what they've got to say or ask considering kotaco is a bunch of posers and couldn't even play the new Doom for anything. Literally they are the reason the meme "git gud" is spewed all over. But let's go down to business.

"You don't want that, you think you do, but you don't." literally a phrase that the developers of WoW said in regards to older expansions having their own servers dedicated towards them, then later on threatening to sue a private server, you know people who are fans of the game that just want to play the game the way that it was all so long ago? Yea sounds like these are the sort of developers to listen to.

considering the vanilla server that was shut down had 150k active players and over 1m accounts in total.

then put this into perspective that the last (somewhat credible) WORLDWIDE subscription number i found for WoW is only 5.5m.

I'm not sure blizzard can really be the best people to quote about mmorpgs, considering on average, WoW has been losing subs since mid-wrath.
my r/p can outdps r/m. your name is stupid.

mages should stack dex. word.

Considering I made a suggestion to allow people to get the stats they wanted faster it seemed to have failed, that would have brought in more money undoubtedly because of fusion stones possibly being bought more/gear being done faster. But hey, it's all a dream though in my eyes, can't have MMORPG without RNG LOLXD

"Only 5.5M subscriptions". Meanwhile RoM can't even get people to play for free.

while i see your point, it was more as basis for comparison.

during wrath, subs were a steady ~12+m.

Anet quoted 7m players one of GW2 expansions.

That's because playing this game as a F2P means it becomes a daily chore simulator (even paying for it), in the end RoM will take either time or money to be successful at it, it will always take your time regardless, but then if you aren't paying for it you'll spend a significantly higher amount of time on it instead.

A game should make someone feel entertained throughout even grinding something.

That and even if you "subscribe" you aren't getting by in RoM on 15 dollars a month. RoM takes either 10x as much money as a sub game or more time than a full time job to actually get anywhere.

DON'T FOLLOW WOW AS AN EXAMPLE!!!

ok, Wow WAS a great game. that is indisputable, the numbers prove it. BUT, their version of listening to players was to remove all required effort or skill from the game to cater to the preteen and younger subscribers. They ruined a great MMO driving over half of their player base out of the game (Again, the numbers prove it). I still subscribe to wow only so that i can play it with my preteen and teen children. they are now the target audience for Blizzard (i do not pay their subs).

This is why I play ROM. In RoM we still need effort. in wow, I face rolled a boss two levels above me by only popping my buffs... oh i had to throw 1 instant at it so i would get kill credit... (95 Mage with garrison. i was wearing quest gear)

WoW bosses are still way more interesting than "Pop buffs and burn for 30 seconds". What game are you playing? RoM doesn't require skill it requires lots and lots of money.

LOL the annual cost of WOW wouldn't even buy you one piece of +20 end game gear in ROM. In addition to spending huge amounts of time on chores.
