Ankaa is both a miner and a graduate of The Order of the Dark Glory’s mercenary education center. She has a close father-daughter relationship with its leader Lajos Halka.
A little background:
“Forty years ago Lajos Halka and the elite of his followers created a base in Dustdevil Canyon which they called the Obsidian Fortress…. Today, the Order of the dark Glory has now become the world’s most powerful military group without their own state. Their members’ only means of surviving is mining and being mercenaries, as well as managing the world’s largest mercenary education center….”
However, this was not accomplished without a price.
In Dustdevil Canyon the Order of the Dark Glory was free from the restrictions placed upon them in Varanas, but not free of conflict. After several brutal encounters with the local Stormreach settlement, the Order finally managed to defeat and banish the natives for good.
Following a particularly vicious battle, the victorious Lajos Halka and his army of mercenaries walked among the broken bodies of the dead and dying, slitting the throats of those who were injured and had been left for dead by their people. It was then that Lajos came across the body of a small child.
She appeared to be suffering from many deep, but non-lethal wounds. However, she was bleeding heavily and would soon die of blood loss. As Lajos approached, the young girl reached for the hunting knife of a fallen warrior and brought it before her in a futile attempt to protect herself. Her bright green eyes bore into his soul with such a fierce, fiery force of will that Lajos swore he would never forget them. There was something in her eyes that reminded Lajos of himself, and he admired her bravery so much that he decided to spare her life.
The child was forced to work in the mines, where hard labor and dark caverns made her strong and gave her an uncanny ability to see clearly in areas of little or no light. Her small body made her useful to the other miners, who used her to mine ores in hard to reach places or tiny caves. Lajos watched her work from afar.
One day, after the child had been a slave in the mines for three years there was a sudden collapse. Thirty miners were trapped behind a wall of stone and dirt with no way out, so far out in the dark mine that they had no hope for discovery. The young girl was the only one of them who could squeeze through the wall and escape. It took her a full day of traveling through steep cliffs, jagged rocks and pitch darkness to make her way back to the mine’s entrance. She was the only one who knew of the collapse in the mine, which had buried alive thirty of the people who had destroyed her family and enslaved her. However the past three years of working side by side with these people had created a bond that not even revenge could destroy. Not only did she tell the other miners about the collapse, but she also led the search party through the dark, dangerous caverns and aided in bringing supplies to and unearthing the buried miners. Every one of them survived, and Lajos was so impressed by her actions that he took her out of the mines and enrolled her in his mercenary training school.
Over the next ten years the girl was trained in the art of war, quickly rising to the top of her class and defeating all classmates… and even some teachers. Lajos and the girl worked together often, creating the kind of relationship that could only be found between a father and his daughter. The girl graduated early, at the age of 17, and as a graduation gift Lajos gave her his sword. He commanded that she set out to explore the world and see what it has to offer, and then to return when she felt that she understood the world and its workings. Now seventeen, Ankaa travels the world in search of truth and understanding to bring back to Lajos and the Order of the Dark Glory.
