Personality: In his opinion everyone wears masks. Everyone is someone else from time to time. This is to say, most people never really get to know the real Devonal. They get to know the mask he wants them to see. To most people who he has not met before he is charming and flirtatious. He will use his strong social skills to get him what he is after. Most people who have not been crossed by him view him merely as a
rich playboy. A bit spoiled, but not really a threat.
He is a hedonist. He tends to like the finer things in life. He'll indulge himself
where he can. However, he is a true hedonist, not only does he enjoy physical pleasures, he also pursues mental ones. He loves art and music. From a young age he was a prodigy at potions and the magic arts. In his spare time he often reads, tries to invent new spells, or sketches in a small pad of paper he keeps with him. However, he does tend to be a bit distant from others.
Though he likes people, he very rarely gives anyone value. Most people are just toys and he does like to play. If one breaks, he can always find some thing new to play with. He often experiments on others and will attempt new spells and feats of magic just to see if he can. There is too much fun to be had to worry about danger or the potential of making enemies. In short, the majority of the masses are to be used.
There are few he has a sturdy bond with. Those who know the real him. In friendship he is a bit of a jester. He is willing to tease and flirt with all his friends (both male and female). He's never beyond making a bet, even when the subject matter may be inappropriate. Despite this, most of his friends know not to cross him. He can become haughty and fierce. If angered enough by a friend he would not hesitate to strike out or kill them. In aftermath he may feel sorrow or regret, but also that they should have been more careful. In love he can be quite tender and passionate. If he is going to love you he will do so with his whole heart. Meralda has found how protective and devoted he can be when his heart is involved.

Background info/Biography:
Before his birth Devonal's life started on a sour note. His father being a distant relative of the royal family was called away to war. This left his pregnant mother, Niome, alone with his two older brothers, Gavin and Gareth. Though she had servants to aid her Niome ached to have her husband return to her. She would sit by the window waiting for his return. His birth was a normal one, but his father was not there to witness it. Only a few hours hold a messenger showed up to report his father's death. Niome was beside herself with sorrow and left a wet nurse to take care of her new born son. Later on in life his brothers would tease him, mocking him they would tell him he caused their father's death because he was such a curse of a little brother. Devonal had nothing to do with his noble father's death, but he took the mockery to heart and began to believe it.
Otherwise his childhood was relatively normal. At a young age he began to demonstrate high intelligence and creativity. He learned to play the violin, lute, and piano by the age of seven. Though he did love to play outside, he was usually found inside studying one subject or another. He'd always tell his nanny, Aggy, that he wanted to learn all the secrets of the world. As a youth he was bright eyed and hopeful. Though his brothers would pick on him, as brothers often do, he would never really fight back. In fact, there were many time their harsh words or rough housing would send him crying to Aggy's arms. He was always small and not all that strong of body. His
brothers were always bigger and stronger. His one comfort was that he know while they were strong of muscle, he was strong of mind.
About the age of 11 he and his brothers were out playing in the woods when they spot their first elf. Up until that point elves had almost been mythology to them. The boys all knew they were real, but the elven race was so rarely seen off the isles that they were viewed by many to have fallen to history and became a thing of fantasy. The elven girl, Medearea, was beautiful and dark as a moonlit spring night. All three of the brothers fell in love with her almost at once.
Gavin and Gareth began to compete vigerously for Medearea's affections. Though they were both only 15 at the time they did not seem swayed. Time and time again she would reject both of the twins. She would tell them that she had no use for childen. Devonal watched feeling that he had no chance. He was still just a boy, even more so than his brothers. Looking at her made his heart ache with need. For once he wanted to win. He wanted it so bad he could taste it. Staying silent he began to form a plan. It would not be quick, in fact it would take many years of research. He still had much to learn, but he began to plot while trying to remain unassumingly in the background.
When he was 19, he was finally ready to put his plan into action. He concocted a death like sleeping potion and tricked Medearea into drinking it. Once he was out and appearing to be gone from the world he left her safely tucked away. Sneaking out to the local tavern he made sure that both Gavin and Gareth (both now 23) had an ample amount of ale. Seeing to it they were both drunk he arranged a fight between them over who deserved Medearea more. Both the twins stormed off into the night, both passed out soon after. Thrilled that things work going according to plan, Devonal found both his brothers and stole their swords while they snoozed in their drunken slumber. Going back to where he had Medearea hidden away he cut into her. Carefully controlled the bleeding he took enough blood to smear on both the weapons, but stopped it before she could truly succumb to death's embrace.
The next morning he went to Gavin with Gareth's weapon and told him that after the fight Gareth had lost control and had killed Medearea. He present the weapon as proof. And took his oldest brother to see Medearea's 'body'. Leaving his brother to his sorrow he left to search out Gareth. Taking to him Gavin's weapon covered in blood. Devonal told his other brother the same he'd told the first. It went well. However, the twins would soon come to blows over what really happened. Devonal thought he would be discovered, but masterfully admitted that he really did not know which one had struck the killing blow. He blamed both of his older brothers for being too belligerent. He cried telling them that though he wasn't sure which one of them had done the deed, one of them had killed the beautiful elven girl. This both Gavin and Gareth believed. In his bluffed sorrow Devonal cast a curse upon his brothers. They would both immortally live as monsters. They would never die, always remaining young, but also swayed to turn into beasts. Gavin can now turn into a Wolf; Gareth into a bear. In disgust and despair the two older bothers went off on their own paths cursing themselves for what they believed they had done.
Returning to Medearea, Devonal gave her two potions. One to make her love him, the other to awaken her. After many years of plotting and waiting it seemed that he had all he wanted. For some time they lived happily. Devonal was less than faithful, but it was often over looked. With his spell chaining her closely to him, Medearea never seemed to see any wrong in Devonal, not even his darkest deeds. In time Medearea become with child. It was a joyous occasion for both the couple. However, it wasn't to last. A mixed child is though on an elven body. The birth nearly killed Medearea. The only thing that saved her and bound her to this world was Devonal's grasp of magic. She now lingers somewhere between this world and the next. Though physically living, Medearea's mind is gone and her soul shattered. She is a shadow of what she once was. Deep down Devonal knows he should let her drift off to the next world, but as of yet, he is greedy and cannot bear to let her go.
The child, a girl named Raelyn, was ill treated by him. He took care of her and did not abandon her to fate, but he blamed her for what had happened to her mother. It Raelyn had never been born, then Medearea would never be the way she was. He both loved and hated the girl. He wanted to have a relationship with her, but any length of time spent with her always ended badly. Almost reluctantly he let servants do most of the work raising her.
***
Recently, he seems to have taken some missteps. He has gotten very good at staying alive and perfected a potion that renders him 19 for all time when taken regularly. However, now he seems to have several members of the Crimson Guard out for his life. Though he knows he has done wicked things, he cannot always remember why these people would want to kill him. Or he does not think he was completely in the wrong for his actions.
He set out to sway one of the members, Meralda, to his side. At first his kindness to her was sugary sweet and false. He did not care about her, she was just someone else to use to his will. He would use her to get an insider into the Guard. It would help him stay alive. However, the more he got to know the girl, the more he began to feel for her. He was beginning to buy his own con. One night Meralda, ended up standing up and defending his life. No one else had ever done this for him. No one else had sat down and listened to his side of the story. Falling in love was never part of the plan. However, he found himself stumbling down that step slope. He's found that perhaps what he felt for Medearea was never really love, but a obsessive infatuation. He did care for his wife, he still does, but nothing has ever been as effortless with her as it is with Mera. He sees the dangers in these emotions and has thought of leaving to protect both of them. However, he knows his time away would never last.
He keeps up his appearance of darkness when around his colleagues. However, they may have even notices him getting a little softer around the edges. He will still be rough with any one he out ranks when crossed, he is till fiery, but there is something there that shows that perhaps his affections for Mera are making him weaker.
