What is Role Play exactly?? LOL

When you guys mean.. "Looking for a RP guild/player" you mean finding someone that gets in the paper of the toon, like talking in funny accents, and following a story line?

Yeah, they get in character and if you go out of character they'll act like you're an alien

Yeah like if you're a dwarf, you constantly mention how short you are, and if you're an elf, you constantly talk about how much you love trees and nature and what not. It's basically where you pretend you are your character in game. You can also have text based roleplaying fights, where you say "i shot a fireball at you", and the person your fighting could say "oh, but wait, I used a water spell to put out your fire" or some nonsense like that lol.

Which is a shame, since the relationship system really does lend itself to it.

My guess is that there's so much out-of-character chat required to organize and instruct people through the complex game mechanics, that there's not often opportunity for in-character improv storytelling.

Yeah exactly, the game is too big and complex to be always in character.. There are better games for RP, but RoM is the best f2p mmorpg so it worths it to not roleplay and enjoy this awesome game :)

Role-playing essentially is like acting in a movie without the script.
Unless you created your RoM character to talk and act like your real self, if you respond to other players differently than how you would have done as your real self...you are roleplaying.

There is no set guidelines on what is roleplaying, other than acting and responding differently than your real self.
A fighter who is big and wield big weapons does not have to be the strong deep voiced individual who fears none.
The mage does not need to act like a nerd or arrogant smartie-pants.

In a way we all role play to some extent as driven by our choice of class. A tank tries to be the first in battle, a priest hopes the mobs will ignore them as they try to keep their party alive, and DPS try to do as much damage as possible without drawing attention. These are all roles, to put it simply. You can go out of role in battle and end up dead, so it is kind of self re-enforcing.

In a way, Hailm3, it harkens back to the "Old Days of D&D" (the real one, not the anonymous online versions ;)) where a group of friends would gather together, with pencils, player sheets, player's guides, and dice (yes, I do still have my full bag of all the dice!). You created full backstories for your character, interacted with each other in "role" and had a furiously hysterical blast while your talented, creative Dungeon Master led you through the bones of the story he or she had created; it was up to you to fill out the story as it progressed.

It's been quite some time since we had a significant number of RP players in-game; they seem to have faded away as the obsession with becoming "endgame" took over. Unfortunate, really; the creative fun on the side of the players has all but disappeared. :(

You see, role playing is an art. What is role playing? It's playing a role. lol I have had a lot of guides for it, and it doesn't take long to write more. In part, you are a story teller, making a story with several other story tellers. I, myself, like paragraph style. I don't act out my scenes in game, unless it's "walking" some where. All of my actions are typed. For example:

Josie was seen looking out at the horizon on the bank at the river in silverspring, a look of worry portrayed her face as the knight approached her. She took in a deep breath and released it when she saw the knight. She stands up and nods her head at him, "Good day." she says, her voice very soft and pleasant, with a tiny hint of depression. The knight could obviously tell something was wrong with the usual cheery girl.

And there you have an RP Opening. From there the knight would reply to me and then I could tell him what's wrong, or something else. :) On Govinda we have an RP channel and I have a dwarf clan (dwarves and pretty ladies only!). With dwarf clan we rp in the pub, and we do dungeons. :) Yes, most of the RPers have quit the game, but I'm sure there are more out there and I'm not afraid to advertise. I'm proud to RP, as it shows I have a talent that a lot of people do not. Imagination.

I like you already. :) Endgame puts a hold on rpers, but there's a time and place for everything. I'm an end-game healer, but since I am end game, I have nothing to do but rp in my free time. :) As I was leveling I would RP on a certain day, or when I didn't feel like lvling. As questing is boring. :D

PS: I think I sieged your guild not long ago. *Altana - Govinda*

Hi there,
There are several ways to roleplay in an MMO, let's look at these not any other ways there might be ;)

RPing in MMOs can be seen as most close to Pen & Paper roleplaying.

In Pen and Paper you often have a Game or Dungeon Master telling a story in which a character created based on some rules is played by you as a player. Famous P&P systems are D&D (Dungeons and Dragons) or Shadowrun. Most of them are played with help of Dice, but there are also other systems, e.g. in "Engel" there is an Aracana System in which you determine the outcome of events with help of Tarot-like cards.

In MMOs you do most likely not need extra tools to determine what will happen exactly.

"Live" RPing

By this I mean RPing lvie in a group with help of text or voice chat.

One of the most important points when it comes to "live" RPing is that you don't decide what happens.

E.g. you can say "I'll attack him with the intent to kill him." but you can't say "I kill him", that is decide by the dice (or, in RoM, by the use of your skills in combat).

Action are often put in *...* e.g.

"Ah yes *sits down* this is the best time after battle: Ale time! *gives a deep coughing laugh*"

"Story" RPing

Giving your character a background story is also often called RPing. This is most of the time a short fantasy story featuring the early years of the character a person is playing or his adventures. Eg. you could write about fighting in Kulech:

"I'm shivering. My heart is beating fast. We came here to fight our way through these abnormal creatures to gain honor and find treasures, but all I'm hoping for right now is survival. Our healer is down. Her dress is thick with blood. Her leg lies there in a weird ancle. She's hardly breathing. There comes another one. Oh Ayvenas, help!"

RPing can be a lot of fun if all participants agree on the same rules.

I hope I could add some info you find helpful :)

When I used to play on my dwarf, my friends warden and I used to go back and forth...

Dwarf: Stupid pointy eared tree huggers
Elf: Short dumb gnomes
Dwarf: Better watch out or I'll kick your shins
Elf: No you won't, you'll just hump that rock then I'll dwarf toss you!

That was the typical style chat we had with one another occasionally.

It's not always telling a story, sometimes it's just being in character for your toon and acting/talking like you think your character would.
