The best suggestion I can offer in terms of what guilds are active would be to look at the siege queue, any guild above 1k is going to be atleast sort of active and any guild above 2k is going to be pretty active, that's a generalization but it should be pretty accurate, unfortunately you can't view the battle queue without being in a guild first so, I'll list who is registered today for siege (points above 1k, and on Artemis):

Pewpewkittens, Demonlord, Corruption, Battalion, Silentjustice, Theblacktower, isoleeted, Bloodlegion

Immortalsii, Fractured, Tarrasque, Theavengers, Whisperofelves, Whitesharks, Driven

It provides a fairly good slice of guilds, there is one thing though that not all guilds siege and there are very few who don't but Chimaira for example doesn't siege but they atleast seem active since they have a thread on the forums that gets posts and is posted to.

Actually you can see the siege queue without being in a guild, idk when it was changed but it's been like that for awhile.

This is pretty good advice, if their siege points are fairly high they'reprobably a fairly active guild, though of course not all guilds siege.
