Hi!
I'm a huge gamer. I've always wanted to play an online game with others, however I've hesitated because I'm not really a very good player. I'm still working on the entire My*t, R*ven series and I play Mo**owind and Obliv**n at least once a week. I'm uncertain if it is permitted to name other games on this forum. I hope I don't get into trouble with my very first post.

In any event, many thanks for all of the invaluable information provided for newbies. It is much appreciated.

If anyone happens upon me in the game, please be nice to me -)! I'll always be kind...no matter what as it is just a game, but I am a bit worried how much help I'll be able to provide a team. I guess we will see. Nice to meet y'all.

Well, welcome to RoM, and to the forums.

It is permitted to name other games on these forums, so long as you are not using comparing those games to RoM to bash/flame RoM itself. Listing games you have played in the past, or making comparisons between games for constructivity (™ ghostwolf ) purposes is fine.

As for your skills as a player, everyone has to start somewhere. Personally I started with all my leet uber skills maxed out, but you may start like Trunks and be a super noob for life (:p I hope trunks never sees this post).

What server will you be playing on? If you roam on over to Govinda or Palenque, send me a pm here on the forums.

Many thanks for the warm welcome, Ghostwolf.
Poor Trunks lol...hope he/she has a good sense of humor.
I've just created my characters so far.
I'm not quite sure which server to use, so perhaps I'll give Govinda a go. Very cool name...Govinda sounds like a delicious magical treat.
Thanks again...wish me luck!

Hi There Ghostwolf,
I presume the guild invitation was from you? If so, thank you.
I'm unable to play in Govinda because my character is leveling in Grimdall? I believe it it is called.
I don't know how to switch my character over to Govinda.
The game is wonderful so far, the potential is endless.
I've had KBE for several years, but I'll need to wait until I come across some sort of tutorial.
Please advise when you have the time if I am able to have my character play on the Govinda channel.
Thanks for reading my rambles...good luck to you and have fun in your game.

Defining what a "daily" is would be helpful. It took me to the 2nd day to figure out that the quests you're talking about there are only the ones you get off bulletin boards, which I didn't even know existed until day 2. Also, you can't actually get the quests off the bulletin board until you talk to some guy hanging around there (Might have been called a "quest manager" or something).

So I did a ton of quests the first day, got no tokens, thought maybe the tokens would be awarded at reset or something.

Is there no manual? No offense, but all the newbie advice I've been able to find so far is pretty haphazard. For instance, suddenly I'm not healing over time anymore and I have no idea why. Is it a bug? Did I do something I shouldn't have? I'm walking around with 184 HP out of 288 for about an hour now, where up to now this has always healed itself fairly rapidly over time. Not a single HP for me anymore!

Another thing I can't find documented anywhere, is how to make things like the insecticide for the ents work. I put it in the top item bar above where the weapons are, tried clicking on it then on the ent, and half the time I accidentally start a fight. I've tried left clicking and that only seems to work intermittently as well - last time I tried that I STILL accidentally started a fight (and got killed daid). Also "autoshot" doesn't seem to do a darn thing. It lets off one shot, then nothing. Why?

Has RoM not got a basic manual somewhere?

Mostly to use items like the insecticide you have to target the target, then use the item. Mostly you will need to be in combat with them anyway, as you have to reduce the mobs health before you can use the item successfully.

Also your health not regenerating is probably as you are still in combat. I''d suggest de-summoning your Newbie Pet and seeing if that works for you.

Autoshot should toggle, just press it once and it should automatically go off at the speed of your weapon.

I think there might be some kind of manual with a boxed copy but don't quote me on that.

Best way to learn is to play and read the forums.

Yeah, I HAVE been reading the forums and other than asking a direct question, there really isn't any REAL newby advice - not for the basic stuff at least.

How could I still be in "combat mode" if I've killed the critter? SEVERAL critters since, in fact? Bug?

I have no idea how to "desummon" my "pet" nor how to get it back should I "desummon" it (which I assume means sending it away somehow). I'll try to figure it out but this is VERY frustrating when you have to do things by trial and error.

As for targeting things you don't really want to kill, that's just broken. Period paragraph. Once you've hit the thing with a sword you're just plain screwed, it will not let you use the (cage for bright birds/insecticide for ents). You have to fight to the death. You should be able to target without killing, either by selecting the non-killing item to start with so that targeting does NOT result in an actual attack, or doing a left click or ctl-click or SOMETHING. Maybe I should just de-equip all weapons before trying something like that from now on.

Thanks for your specific answers but I wish I didn't have to keep asking them! This game has been around for awhile, hasn't it? It just seems that these basic issues ought to be covered somewhere already, and not by forcing you to sift through 25,000 forum postings! (Searches on these issues, btw, don't turn up anything useful either, can't tell if that's because the info isn't there or because the search sucks, LOL!)

Edit: OK apparently it is a bug but no luck finding out how to desummon the thing yet. More questions though - what is TP or XP debt???? and how does the pet help with that?

You just have to keep plugging away. Not really sure where you can get newbie help. Basically a lot of the starter quests explain stuff about the game and as an Elf you can go to Pioneer Village once you have gotten to Varanas and do all the human training missions as well. You can talk to your newbie pet as well, it has some good info for beginners.

Also see if you can find a guild accepting newbies - having someone ingame to talk to makes things easier and more enjoyable. Certainly should be more friendly than zone chat, though imo zone chat should be more busy a lot of people shouldbe braver about using it even if you do get occasionally flamed.

Yes, pets including the newbie can get you stuck in combat, meaning little to no HP or mana regeneration. You desummon it by clicking on the egg in your backpack. They can help with debt as once a day you can ask them for Atonement Vouchers that clear your debt once used. You get debt that must be paid off once you die, though you don't get any under level 10.

I don't attack targets that I am focussing. You might be as you have mouse movement enabled, I only use the keyboard. You might also be double clicking. I think if you right click and select focus, that should also target without attacking. Another tip is to use Tab, this selects targets that are in front of you.

As I say the best thing is to just start playing and don't be afraid of making mistakes, we all did, and most of us still do. I'm awful at this game, but the point is to enjoy it not be the best. It isn't a race as my mother would say :)

Here is some light reading for you - it should shed some light on the basics for you.

For most things there will be a guide out there about it. Just relax and have fun.

Wow. While it does give a lot of good information, the game still has a lot to take in. I feel I am missing a lot of important information that I assume I will learn once I get in a guild (will be looking into that after this post) and the players finish 'rounding out' my education.

Note:For the newbs-when you accept quests, you will see red circles on the map, those are the targets of the quest you are currently on. You can also hit 'M' for map and you will see the checks (which means completed quests) and if you are lost, right click on the checks and hit follow. From there a red arrow will give you the proper directions to go to get to your target.

Hope this helps as it took me 2 days to figure it out.

Hey. great guide! This answered a lot of questions. :D

But just one more. This is kinda a general question, but I was wondering: I'm in the Valley of Preparation. What should I do there? There are so many options, but which ones are the ones that I should really try out?

Oh, and how do you leave, if you want to? And if you do, do you get to go back?

Okay, so that was about three questions. ;) But thanks!

All of them, eventually. And I think VoP is a lot more confusing and disorganized than Pioneer Colony and Logar. I'd start a human toon and learn the game that way even if you dont intend to play him in long run.

Elves have two ways to do it. At first, you use airship, and that is when you are sent to take it by a quest. That will take you to Varanas and back. Once at Varanas, you can activate Snoop there and then Snoop will port you between Varanas and Elven Island.

Oh, and people who have more than 3 classes are clinically insane.

Ooh, thanks for the response. You're right, VoP seems very confusing. I just might follow your advice and make a human adventurer just to get a grip on the basics. ;) Thank you so much!

Oops, and before I forget. :P I know that to leave the VoP, I need an airship quesdt. But how do I get the quest? Do I get it when I turn level ten?

Really you should just do what quests you have available at first - as you are learning there is no real need hurry anywhere.

To answer your question though, you can start the quest chain to get off the island at level 3, and I'm not certain that you cannot get off the island without it. The quest follows on from the gathering quests, with this one, Certification Completion.

It's quite possible to get off Elven Island while doing *none* of the quests there. Any number of lvl 1 or lvl 2 Elf gold spammers are proof of this.

Either delete toon or just continue to level it to 30 and select third class. (like if you invested some diamonds on that account)

You can choose your third class at 20/20. You can also use a Fruit of Forgetting to erase a class but that is pretty expensive so if you are low level it is just cheaper to start again, and leave your first toon as an alt in case you change your mind.
