Guide to Malatina's Game:

*NOTE* This guide was created in 07/2009 - which means Ch1. As such it predates the "Course of Terror" introduced in Ch2, and the "Phirius Shells" introduced in Ch4.

That said, most of the info in this guide is still relevant and accurate.

***

Malatina's Game:

A surprising # of players still do not attempt / farm this mini game. You may be surprised to know you're certainly missing out ...

I. Benefits
a. Titles
b. Potions
c. Loot
II. Basics
III. Pro Tips

I. Benefits

a. Titles:

Survivor of Malatina's Game
Past title name was called "Survived the Survival Game". You can get this title from the Malatina solo dungeon. Complete it one time under 10 mins. For more information about the Malatina dungeon visit this link http://forum.us.runesofmagic.com/showthread.php?t=6059

Zone: Varanas City; Central Plaza
Quest required: no
Lvl: any lvl

Contender of Malatina's Game
This title you received after you've beaten the mini game 30 times. You also get +15 Defense, +2 all attribute and +100 HP if you wear this title as well.

Zone: Varanas City; Central Plaza
Quest required: no
Lvl: any lvl

King of Moles (+6 all attribute, 200 hp, 25 pdef.) You can get this title by completing 100 runes in Malatina's mini game.

Zone: Varanas City; Central Plaza
Quest: No
Lvl: any lvl

b. Potions

Phirius Potions can be looted from some chests in the game. These come in 3 varieties, HP, MP or HP+MP. They range from A-E 20%-60% restored instantly of their respective benefits. These potions are insanely good, they make content otherwise impossible possible, and it is highly recommended to farm Malatina’s for these alone.

c. Loot

Vendor Food:
Whites / Greens can drop from any elites that spawn. (can make some good coin from vendoring, and 100+ dura items in AH)

Blues+:
Can drop from chests. (have seen epics and clean yellows drop)

Malatina’s Only:
Rare spawn Cliff Giants can spawn from some tiles … while very hard to kill but the reward is a piece of jewellery that can potentially be very very powerful. (@ low levels they can be better than Vahtos set items, and @ higher levels they get X and IX stats that can be worth millions!)

Crafting Matts:
Guaranteed 1/12 chests has a Malatina’s specific crafting material used in crafting powerful blue items.

Phirius Tokens:
some chests may hold tokes, from 5-40 per chest … it’s possible to actually make tokens on a run!

II. Basics

Entry:
Malatina is a Clown balancing on a ball in Central Varanas. Pay her 30 Phirius tokens to gain entry into her game. Confirm you are ready with the NPC inside the dungeon to begin the 10 minute timer.

The Game:
You have 10 minutes to attempt Malatina’s. Upon entering you’ll see 36 tiles, a totem pole centered in the room, 4 “portals” in the room’s corners, and the perimeter tiles guarded by “plants”.

Tiles:
Each tile has a chance to spawn a chest, a bomb (sml/med/large), an eilite(rare spawn of Cliff Demon and regular elites possible), nothing at all (which will result in a full heal or an aoe knock down).

Totem Pole:
Friend and Foe. While plant’s are up the pole emits “beams” that either slow, damage/disorient or heal your character. Every so often it will also emit an AoE that either knocks down or heals you.

Portals:
Will either heal for 100hp per tick(2s) or teleport you to another corner of the room.

Plants:
Plants should be killed asap. They are weak, but the beams sent from the Totem to Plants can severely hurt your chances of success. Each plant will “spawn” an elite once killed. These elites are weaker than tile spawned versions.

Chests:
Can contain Phirius tokens, Items, Crafting Matts, or Potions.

Bombs:
come in 3 sizes, each has roughly a 1.5 tile radious. Each size does increasingly more damage to your character.

Winning:
You must “dig” each tile and loot every chest (12 in total) within the 10 minute time limit to win the game.

III. Pro Tips

  • Only attempt on the 5'S & 10'S ... elites change every 5 and 10 levels (begin @15). so the recommended level to start is 20. This will give you the best chance of surviving and completing.
  • Kill Plants First! Leaving even one can seriously slow you down if struck by a slow or disorient beam.
  • AoE and DoTs are king … use to clear Plants and the spawned elites if you can. If not, highest damage single spamable skill you have is likely best.
  • Clear tiles in a pattern. Some weave, others go in rows, others start from the middle and work their way out, and still others will clear every third tile (to avoid bombs). Find a pattern that works for you and it’ll make it a much easier task.
  • Keep HP and MP topped off … you’ll never know when a Cliff Demon may spawn and they hit HARD.
  • Can’t avoid a bomb? JUMP! You’ll take damage, but won’t suffer the indignity of the knockdown.
  • Totem giving you grief? Try clearing tiles while square to the totem … often you can “stare” it into submission and it won’t cast it’s AoE. (not 100% but it does work)
  • dont want to wipe out the 1st set of mobs? just get a Pheonix Redemption then and when you go in no mobs to clear.. and no fire damage from that post in the middle. *thanks Delano
Any other tips from the community will be added.

Thanks.

Tried several times and the Cliff Demons always wipe me out, so dunno, maybe low levels have harder time.

Cliff Demons are very tough. an under geared (to solo a hard hitting elite) player may not fare well against it. Play to your strenghts, and if needed run to a portal for some healing or a quick "escape" to another corner.

Yups thanks for this and the others you have done, I think most will agree they are very valuable to the players

Although it's been awhile since I tried, if you talk to the npc after you talk to the clown girl she gives the option of using a phoenix redemption ticket.

Using one of these eliminates the totem and other poles on the tiles.

So then you just need to dig, fight, loot.

I guess its based on your secondary lvl also. I'm 50/41 and when I do it the mobs that spawn from the plants are only lvl 40 mobs (not elites) and the elites that spawn from tiles are also only lvl 40...never even seen a 'cliff demon' spawn and have been doing it everyday for about 2 weeks...guess that means I'm also getting the same rewards a lvl 40 would be getting from the chests.....

The Cliff Demon can be stunned and locked down to give certain classes more time. I have been able to defeat it with various different class combos in various levels, as I do farm this instance with different levels for the drops.

M/P 50/50 - Discharge, Flame, Lightning, walk back, Flame/Fire. If you can't defeat it in this cycle, run to the closest porter which ports you and leave combat and try again. It won't heal.

R/x 22/x - a little more tricky, take a potion right away, and try to get to a porter to leave combat and to prep for your assault. Premeditation, Sneak Attack, Assassin's Rage, and then try to get up behind him and spam your instant attacks as much as you can while kiting it to the closest porter. If you think you are closer to killing it, then kite it to a healing portal instead.

W/R 44/32 (I dual Wield instead of 2H) - Shout, Frenzy, Blasting Cyclone, Spam your instant attacks and kite it again to a portal (teleport if you think you can't finish it, heal if you do)

K/M 36/30 - I keep my Holy Light Field and Lightning Armor up, if you are not prepared, use Shackles to lock it down and prep. Use your Shield of Valor and Truth to lessen its damage, and spam your attacks, use Resolution as needed and as always kite it to one of the portals as you see fit. Since a Knight takes a little longer to kill it, its best to get it to a porter one first then heal up and try to kill it on the second go round.

Of course my M/P has the easiest time in killing it, typically lightning/discharge and one or two flames will typically kill it for me. But with practice I do believe any class has a chance to kill it, use your potions when you get 50% hps as it can stun you with one of its attacks.

Below is what the room's portals do. The "O" is the doorway in which you came in.

X1-O-----X2

X3-------X4

X1 - heals
X2 - ports you to X1 (doesn't always leave combat)
X3 - ports you to X2
X4 - heals

Hope this helps anyone having problems defeating the Demon. It has a guarantee blue accessory drop, some are of course better than others.

I have had it spawn 3 times for me in one game, and sometimes I don't see it for a while, so its very random.

Rogues should fire off their 5m and do a standard Rogue Combo, followed by whatever DPS you feel is necessary. Pot if necessary. I never have any problems with him.

Thanks ValorFenix that helps, the cliff demon hits hard and stuns, but from my experience (I only play 1 char atm) I have been able to take it with a W/S using Vamp Arrow and Stun Shot and running and continuing this process. :D
That was at like level 20-25 range for my class. I think the monsters upgrade to level 20 when you hit level 26, i havent tried since then i should now while im still 30/30. I can just never finish in time :(.

Last time I did it, I was M/P and went around AOEing all the plant things and the guardians popping out of them till the board was cleared... and it took me 6-8 seconds to kill the elites spawning from tiles... yet I was unable to finish it.
I was lv51, and the Cliff Demon guy was 50 Elite, yet I took him down without much trouble. (Maybe cause of my uber epic pet xD)
Everything is on Osha :)
Bombob 60 M/52 W/50 P (I play M/P and P/W)

My pet: LV37 Holy Fire Parrot
28 STR/19 DEX/488 STA/694 INT/579 WIS
100 Loyalty, 100 Nourishment, 100 Aptitude
Lv13 Herbalism/Lv30 Woodcutting/Lv13 Mining

Whenever I play my Priest, I equip the title "Elven Academy Paradigm of Excellence" for the lolz.

Add to the guide also that you are specifically discussing the Survival Game option, since Malatina has 2 games. It would be great if you could add a guide for the other Malatina game too, called Course of Terror. It's a pretty complex puzzle in comparison to the others with a lot of room for error; I haven't seen many thorough guides or explanations of that one, but it's very fun to play through and is more level-friendly (doesn't focus as much on mobs as it does puzzle-solving skills, so even lower level players can enjoy that one).
Good work :)

Hmm...yes it was a necro, but given the new significance of the mini games, I think resurrecting this thread was probably a nice thing to do. :)

Nice guide, btw.

Nice necro, but as Neelah said considering the new significance of the games (Shells anyone?) much better than a new post.

And nem does an excellent job explaining the game.

So, umm...shells?? I played this for the first time today...BARELY finished it. Got everything cleared with about 10 seconds to spare. But, the time just counted down and I got ported out...no shells. Is there something else you have to do??
