Malatina's Dungeon [Guide]

Well I just ran Malatina's Dungeon Game, so I figured I would share my thoughts on how to complete it. According the the dialog from Malatina AFTER you complete your run, if you manage to dig up all the squares and open all the chests 30 times, she will present you with a special award.

To enter the dungeon

Malatina is in Varana's Central Square, standing on a ball around the fountain. Simply talk to her and she will provide you entrance into the Dungeon Room. To take the quest, you must have 30 Bernidine Tokens on hand, and you can only take it once per day.

Personally, I would suggest doing the Valentine's Day quest right before this for the small buff. If you can, get someone to buff you with a long term buff as well, Amplified Attack and Enhanced Grace of Life come to mind.

Once you have accepted her challenge, she will teleport you into her zone. Her servant is standing in front of the doors, and the timer will not start until you talk to him and request entry. That means you can do any last minute buffs/meditations before you get busy.

Once the doors open, the game begins.

1. Clear a working space
First off, the layout is basically a large chess board. Under each tile is either a treasure chest, monster, or bomb. At the edges there are some energy looking pilons that will zap you every few seconds. To dig up a tile, just click on it as you would a resource. Like harvesting resources, if you are damaged it will halt the timer and force you to begin again, so before you begin digging, clear out a space free from the zaps by clearing off a section of board. For example:
xxxxxx
x----x
x----x
x----x
x----x
xxxxxx
This represents the board, with all the x's being an energy pilon. To avoid getting zapped, immediately destroy one of the corner pilons, then work your way in on both sides. So after demolishing the first 5 energy pilons, you would have an open digging field as so...
xxxxxx
x----x
x----x
0----x
00---x
000xxx
This means all of the squares marked with a 0 should be safe to dig in without getting zapped. To continue, just work your way around the board, clearing off the energy pilons. For example:
000xxx
000--x
000--x
000--x
000--x
000xxx
In the scenario, you've destroyed half of the pilons on one side, so exactly half of the board is safe to use. Apparently, the pilons shoot rays only from pilon to pilon, so you can clear them out in strange ways to maxmize space.

For my next attempt, this is the order of pilon clearing/digging I plan to use. Feel free to post your own attempts/suggestions:
1. Destroy Pilons
xxxxxx
9----x
8----x
7----x
6----x
12345x

Dig Tiles
xxxxxx
1----x
23---x
456--x
789(10)-x
(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)x
Then I will destroy the pilons on the right side (* shows a cleared/dug tile):
xxxxxx
*----5
**---4
***--3
****-2
*****1
Then clear all the open tiles, except for the northern wall.
xxxxxx
******
******
******
******
******
Now this next part is speculation, but I think it might be quicker to time your digs on the last N wall of pilons with the energy bursts, so that you dig up the tile without killing the pilon or getting zapped. If possible, it will save you some time from having to kill the pilons by just ignoring their bursts, which should only affect you if you are actually standing on the N row of tiles when it happens. If this doesnt work, then obviously you will have to destroy the pilons on the N side too, and dig under them for their chest/loot/monsters.

2. Bring the best potions you can use
Remember, this is a TIMED event. You do not have time to sit there and meditate to regain HP/Mana, so bring the best potions you can afford, and use them up religiously.

3. Concentrate on high damage in as little time as possible
I would highly suggest that low DPS dealers grab the highest damage combo/quickest damage combo they can find, as this is all about clearing the board as quickly as possible. As a K/P, I am used to the slow and steady approach to clearing out mobs. That does NOT work here, you need to maximize damage and use potions to clear through as quickly as possible.

4. Watch out for bombs
The small bombs only have a 2 tile radius (1 excluding the bomb itself). Just step back and you'll be fine.
The medium bombs have a 3 tiles radius, maybe 4. If you have the room, back off immediately. If not, just take it.
I havent seen a large bomb yet, but I assume there is no safe part for it. Just hit a potion and keep going.

Well that's it so far. When i first got in I wasn't sure what to do, and consequently I only opened 3/4's of the squares on my first try. But I am confident it is possible to get them all if you clear your space properly, watch out for bombs, and have a ready supply of potions.

Once we have a bit more input from other users, I will add screenshots and a more complete walk thru. If you have an alternative strategy to share, feel free to post it as a reply and I will include it.

Good Luck!

Talanithus:

1st, thank you for this guide.

2nd, is level an issue here, or are the bombs and monsters auto-scaled to the user, do you know?

All bombs and monsters are scaled. If you are level 20, you'll get more powerful mobs then if you were level 15. However, I believe you must be level 15 to access the game/dungeon.

I've only tried it twice so.
Yesterday I did it like you suggested, clear an area, dig, continue
It didn't seem that efficient so today I did differently.

Start
Stay off the board to avoid pylon lighting and bursts
Use whatever skill works fastest to destroy all pylons
When you start destroying them, other pylons will turn into mobs
Kill and destroy around board until all pylons/guards are gone.
I didn't bother looting mobs, saves a little time

Start Digging
Use whatever pattern you want and start breaking tiles
Just break tiles, and take appropiate action
Chest: next tile, leave chests
Bomb: move to tile out of range and continue digging
Elite: Fight

The other things that happens is the center pylon will start to glow, that means it's getting ready to Pop. I don't think you can do anything about this other then get off the board, which probably takes more time then just taking the kit and standing back up.

With about 2 minutes I stop digging and start looting chests.

Other then that, it's seems pretty straight forward.
I didn't clear today, had six tiles left.
I also have yet to bother with the corner transporters.

Pretty fun game.
Uninstalled and done. bye

I think it's already been proven that you must loot the chests to get a complete status.

I myself didn't make it very far as I didn't realize right away you can kill those pylons so I thought I was just timing it wrong, or lag was getting me ( I usually run 200-500 ping times. ) We'll see how we do today when I get a chance to try it.

I'm not sure how fun this will be for non-dps classes. I'm a P/R and we all know we kill efficiently and well, but not FAST really. The dots take time to work, we shine when we can dot 3-4 mobs at once and still stay alive. We'll see what happens though !

Live and learn !

boothg, perhaps you should try casting DOTs on one pilon, then attacking another directly while waiting for cool down? They really dont have that many HPs, you might be able to clear them off quicker that way.

When the last pilons turn into monsters, you could just cast DOTs on them while in between digging.

Just a suggestion, as I dont use DOT spells myself.

Did they change the instance or something? The last 2 times I have gone through it, I have died with my lvl 23 Knight. I've done it 3 in a row where I have not died but rather ran out of time. Yesterday my first tile that I broke was an elite tangea wanderer which had 2200 HP and he killed me faster than I could use pots. Then just now I had one of those elite rock dudes 3 shot me with 2 critical hits of the 3. That was just on my 5th tile.

my 2 cents

I have found that if you clear the board first then go start digging once you get the giant elite.. you must run for the porters.. it will port you to the other side .. and throw off the big elite. .. the big elite in turn will then become stationary .. and hopfuly you have cleared the area around him .. i have no idea on how you would get the last tile since he sits on it. and you cant no way can anyone kil him .. im wondering how anyone can complete this ?
is there a key to this elite ? anyone?

Here are my pointers, I have gotten to the point where I am very close to beating the game:

Each class is different, so you are going to have to go about handling the game differently depending on that. Some cant just aoe the little stuff and it isn't a big deal, some can just stand there and tank the the elites, even the big one that can pop up.

1) Clear the pylons all at once, you have to do it anyways, you will go much faster if you do it all at once, even with a single attack class with no dots/aoe

2) You CAN avoid the fireblast on some tiles, the ones on the outer edge, especially the corners, do not require watching for the blast. Also, don't wait and see if the blast goes off, it will often look like it will be about to go, but nothing will happen, when it hits, it hits, don't waste time guessing. Watching the blast is just to time when you take a pot/heal.

3) You have to kill the elite mobs, start the moment they appear. You probably have to save your big cooldowns for the big elite mob. The elite mobs change every 10 levels, not 5. The big elite mob is very much worth looting, he drops blues. The lower elites are not, they only seem to drop whites. The regular mobs drop nothing good.

You can run away from the big elite mob and cause him to run back to his tile, it does not require porting (I have yet to get the teleporters to actually port me). He de-aggroes if you run to the other side of the room, this is the fastest way to deal with him if you cant just stand there and tank him.

4) Loot the fricking chests, you might die, and more importantly, you have to do it anyways, why are you adding additional time you will have to run around at the end.

5) Get any buffs you can, hp buffs are especially important if you have lower health, and damage buffs are especially important if you have low dmg. Make dmg/hp food. Use the 40-60% berdine pots, save them for the game.

6) People with transmuted/enchanted gear will have a much better chance of completing it, obviously.

Drops

I think we should add a list of good items gotten from the instance
I'm a 42/31 K/W and so far i have received the leather shoulder armor from the wildwind hero set, a blue bound ring with Barrier VII and Def VI, a blue bound ring with Str IX and Def VI, and a number of blue materials and recipes

Mages only!

For me i use purgatory (which 1 hits the alter things) and i just run around the whole board purgatory as i run. I clear out all alters in less then a minute then i begin to dig. Not matter what pops up after i dig one spot i run 3 squares over and start digging another. As i go i kill all mobs that spawn and the running 3 squares dodges all bombs every time. Then with like 2-5 mins left after all squares mined i open the chest. Wala I beat the dungeon.

Yes, I've fought about 5 level 40 elites and killed all but one (Wasnt expecting such a hard creature). as long as you make sure you have full health and pots all ready, and also that you're prepared for it, they're really no problem.

The first time the big golem appeared, he scared the heck out of me. But he can be killed, or at least the level 20 version could be killed, at least as a KP (with crappy DPS). Now that I am level 30 and I am wondering what is going to pop!

As an update, the new patch has made the pilons MUCH harder by double spawning them. Not sure how this is going to affect the game play yet, as I've only once run it with the new guardians.

When the Golem spawns, it's best that you use your 10 minute skill.
So far, I've only been able to kill the Golem on my Priest Primary, who is Level 50, fighting a Level 45 Golem.

I would love to hear a strategy from someone who has completed the event. The only way I can see someone doing it within the time limit is to just open the tiles and not loot any chests. It takes ~5 seconds to loot a chest and there's roughly 12 of them, so that's a full minute you spend just opening chests. That's also not counting your reaction time when you uncover a chest and the extra time you spend if you get knocked down from the AoE while opening and have to restart.

In order to get the "you cleared all tiles" you need to open all the chests. Plus, what's the point of a "treasure hunt" if you don't open the chests and claim the treasure? lol

I've completed it 12 times so far, but my "trick" is to use a Phoenix redemption. It's hard to open all tiles if you also have to deal with the "guards".

I've killed the elite golem every time he spawns, because he drops some very nice rings. (lvl 30/28 Knight/Mage).

My general strategy is to take out the plants going clockwise, then agro all the elites that spawn and take them out. (W/R) best i've gotten is all dead by 7min mark. (and i'm 1-2 shotting all mobs) and i've yet to get a clean clear, usually have 2-3 tiles left as time runs out.

I'm wondering if i leave some plants up will they evnetually turn to elites? seems taking out the South East 1/4 of the grid, and mining / looting would be a better strategy if plants eventually become elites.

What strategies do others use?

Anyone know how the determine the level of the mob? I was a 19/16 P/R yesterday when I ran this for the first time. I cleared about 60% but that was against level 15 mobs. I gained a level to make 20/16 last night and I'm wondering will I have to face level 20 mobs tonight?

BTW P/R is great for taking on those eleites. It's very slow but I can heal as fast as they hurt me.

So far I have completed this 1 out of every 3 tries, thereabouts, using a Mage/Priest. The biggest problem I have (and I'm guessing it's just my luck) is the amount of AE knockdowns the center pylon dishes out during the final 2 minutes. They seem to happen at a much quicker frequency. My strat is really easy. I start off Thunderstorm-ing everything in my path until every plant/elite are gone (takes me a little more than a minute). I maybe able to do this faster with using Purgatory Fire. I then proceed to dig starting from the center tiles (the outer edge corner tiles don't get hit by the AE so I usually save them for last) and spiral outwards. Any elites that come up I kill right then and there. I don't loot anything until I hit the 3 minute mark then start looting. I then dig and loot the rest of the way.
