Protect My Throat - Alice will not complete

My toon has the quest Protect My Throat and the NPC Alice has the quest complete marker above her head, but when talking to her she only offers to sell Herbalism recipes and will not offer anything to do with the quest.

Have tried changing channels, relogging, dropping and retaking the quest, and waited through the last patch to see if that somehow cleared it.

My toon is an elf and is currently an Herbalism Craftsman at about 2% past level 20, which may be the problem. I don't recall if she had upped her Herbalism before attempting that quest the first time but it's entirely likely she had.

I seem to recall seeing something about this awhile back but couldn't find anything so figure if there was a prior issue it must have occurred before the forum update.

Luckily it's not part of a main quest chain and doesn't seem to be required for zone completion (unless I'm missing it in the list) but it'd be nice to just be able to get it done and out of the way.

I created a toon on Osha (human, wanted to save time) and was able to complete the quest chain.

I don't think your toon's being an Elf or having Herbalism above lvl 20 are issues here, nor do I think the quest is bugged. But here's what I'd like you to try:

You will need to find your character's hidden folder. You will need to have previously enabled Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives. To do this, open Control Panel, change the View By to Large Icons, then find Folder Options. Open that, then click on the View tab, and select the radio button for Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives and click Apply.

If you're using Vista or Windows 7, the folder is located in C:\Users\{account}\My Documents\Runes of Magic. For Windows XP, it's located in C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents\Runes of Magic. Inside the RoM folder, find the folder for the affected character and delete it.

Restart the game--the server will rebuild the character folder. Then see if you can complete the "Protect My Throat" quest. You should be able to.

If the above procedure doesn't work, you have a corrupted game installation and will need to reinstall the game.

Didn't work.

Abandoned the quest, closed the game, found and deleted the folder then emptied my recycle bin, restarted game, accepted quest - and she still refuses to do anything aside offer Herb recipes and tell me she has nothing more to teach me, perhaps I should go see the instructor in Varanas.

This is very similar to the issue I had on elf island where my human toons that had above lvl 20 herbalism couldnt complete the learning herbalism quest there (any that were below 20 completed it no problem) - the required NPC offered no quest info

That's why I thought it might have been a similar cause.


Heh, I just downloaded this game fresh around mid-summer after our AC went out and my PS melted - literally

I got a new computer and hadda download and set up the game again - not sure I wanna go through that again for a quest that doesn't have much overall value - my OCDness will have to suffer.

I'd just roll a new toon but I've allready sunk real money into this one lol.

That happened to me as well, but I have a 73/62/25 toon. Tried to do with my 3rd and instead of opening the quest opens only the recipe menu.

Same issue happens in Logar with Hinus(?) the Alchemy guy. If you get your alchemy above level 20 before trying to get the "Aymi is not Food" quest, he won't give it to you. Seems to be some minor glitches with any crafting/gathering instructors, your skill levels, and any possible additional quests that they offer.

Heh, I was lucky - I took my toon to Pioneers after having finished up on Elf Island and started the quest chain there, then logged off and worked it more another day. The first time I went in she hadn't quite popped lvl 20 Herbalism but she did so while wandering around the area and I took her back to Varanas to up her skill so she could keep earning exp when gathering.

From what memory I have and how things seem to run, I must have gone through the gathering skill quests in Pioneers on the first time around but stopped before doing the Protect My Throat chain and upped her Herbalism before going back to it, otherwise she likely would have been stopped dead in her tracks the same way many toons had been on Elf Island, unable to continue the main chain of quests.

She's an Alchemist as well - will make sure I grab that quest before she gets too high in Alchemy, just to make sure.
