Client Downloader seems to be broken

I have a friend trying to download the game, she has tried three times now. I have walked her through getting the manual updates as well, all to no avail. Also tried going through another site that had the downloader from patch 3.0.8

No matter what we do, she gets hung up on patch 5.0.5.2592 - this is where the downloader breaks. If anyone else has any other solutions, I would gladly entertain them. Otherwise, GameForge you need to fix this IMMEDIATELY!

The EU patch thread has mirror links for the patches. Check the links in my sig.

I have singled out the line that pertains to that.

OK, do you get any error message you can share with us? Or a screenshot?

Also, Yrcanos advises in that thread that patching should be done with all anti-virus, firewall & other security software temporarily turned off. Have you tried that?

I'm really not trying to troll, but anytime I need to turn off my anti-virus and firewall to install something, it raises HUGE red flags for me. I take my computer security very seriously. Even the numerous times I've installed rom, I have never once turned either of those off. If I ever have to in order to install anything, it won't get installed.

I've never had to either. Same red flags go up for me as well Ziav.

As for screenshot or error message, she lives a couple hours away from me, so I have neither of those. She's not all that adept at computers, so it would be hell for me to walk her through getting on here and posting a screenshot at this point. She is very frustrated and almost ready to not install this any more.

Doesn't matter anymore. She has decided to not play this game since the downloader doesn't work. Can't say as I blame her. She's gone back to playing WoW after two years of not playing it. Way to go RoM, driving away new players before they even play the game!

Sorry to see your friend go ghost. I just wonder how many other potential players have these kinds of problems, never post asking for help, but instead just decide the game isn't worth the trouble. The installer should be error free, it is the first impression of the game new players get, so if that isn't working correctly it doesn't instill much confidence the game is worth playing.

I know I'm a bit late to the party on this one, ghost. But bear with me.

First things first. If your friend is still interested in playing RoM (instead of That Other Game), walk her through the process of getting rid of the GameForgeLive downloader application. While I've never used it, you should be able to find it via Control Panel > Programs and Features. Have her uninstall it, then restart her computer. The restart is needed to get it out of the computer's RAM, since it's set to be loaded at startup. Kind of like editing the Registry--once you've saved the edited file you need to restart.

Next, have her delete the existing installation files that she has. Just to make sure.

After that, have her fire up her browser and go here: http://forum.us.runesofmagic.com/showthread.php?t=70835 Inferiority has been kind enough to post and continue updating (as necessary) direct file downloads for the game installer. It'll take about as long to download all of the installation files as it would take using the downloader, but she can probably pull 3-4 files at one time without seriously degrading her download speed.

After she's done that and completed the initial game installation, she can safely and temporarily disable her anti-malware software. She can probably leave her firewall up and running--most people use the Windows Firewall that comes with the OS, and it usually doesn't cause any problems with patch downloading and installation. Her anti-malware program might, which is why we recommend that it be shut down while patching. It can be re-enabled once patching is completed.

As an aside, I had no problems whatsoever manually downloading patch 5.0.5.2592en_5.0.6.2602en, back when it was new. In fact, my copy of the file is still sitting inside my C:\Archive folder (that's my designated download folder, BTW.) When a new patch is issued, I'm the person who updates Tigsman's Manual Patch Files list, and I've learned to test that each patch added to it will download correctly.

On the other hand, starting off with an older set of installation files--in this case the 3.0.8 (Chapter III) files--is usually a Really Bad Idea. Not only does it take that much longer to download and install patches, but there's a far greater chance of having one or more patches fail, especially if you're using a somewhat dodgy InterCatzWebz connection. The Catz cough up furballs and those tend to get entangled with the file(s) being downloaded. You get the picture.

In any event, and if your friend is still interested in playing RoM, give her a hand with this.

Kalvan, your advice is all well and good, but in reality nobody is going to jump though any extra hoops to get a f2p game installed. If the installer/patcher doesn't work, they just move on. It's not worth the time to try to fix the developers issues with the installer just so you can maybe play their game. Like I said earlier, the installer/patcher is the first taste a new player gets of the game, if it doesn't work why would they want to try out the game? The installer/patcher should work flawlessly 100% of the time. Please don't say you can't get 100%, there are millions of applications out that patch and never have an issue.

While I appreciate the effort Kalvan, it is a loss at this point. She is already re-hooked on WoW. You guys lost a possible player due to a sketchy installer. She doesn't want to go through all the hoops when everything works perfectly for her elsewhere. If it would have worked, even the second time, she would be playing right now. She isn't.

On a related note, the updater NEVER works for me. I have to manually install every single update. I am not going to uninstall/reinstall, takes far too much time (of which I am always limited anyways). Still ridiculous that even I have to go through hoops to get RoM to work for me....
